You Can Make A Difference TodayThe Feed My Sheep ministry at First United was born out of the desire to be the hands and feet of Jesus in a tangible way. With every story in the news about the effects of the poor economy on working-class families, it became apparent that the sporadic food drives we sponsored were not enough. The directive of Jesus in John 21 that, if Peter truly loved Him, he would "feed my sheep" was taken literally and so the ministry was born. Partnering with Halifax Urban Ministries (HUM), First United collects food on the first Sunday of every month. Volunteers deliver the food to HUM and it is distributed to working families through their "Feed-a-Family Bag Program". This program's mission is to help those families at risk from becoming homeless by providing five balanced meals that feed a family of four. Items needed include: - Peanut Butter
- Canned vegetables and fruit
- Soup
- Pasta
- Canned meat, chicken, stew, chili, pork & beans
- Cereal
- Tuna
- Macaroni & Cheese
- Dried milk
- Dried beans
- Rice
Lately, there has been a great need for diapers (especially larger sizes, which have fewer diapers per package) since a working family has to send diapers to day care providers in addition to what they need at home. Watch for buy one get one free grocery ads for jars of baby food which is also an ongoing need. If you would like to learn more about Halifax Urban Ministries, please check out their website.
